Why the Cocos (Keeling) Islands are a perfect family-friendly island holiday

With no phone reception on West Island, Cocos offers something rare: a true screen-free family holiday. It’s the ideal chance to disconnect from tech and reconnect with one another while exploring one of Australia’s most pristine island environments.

Think calm beaches, warm water, coral bommies, coconuts, crabs and endless outdoor adventures. For families searching for a safe, nature-based island holiday in Australia, Cocos ticks every box.

Are the Cocos (Keeling) Islands safe for kids?

Absolutely. The Cocos (Keeling) Islands are widely considered one of Australia’s safest island destinations for families.

Life is relaxed on Cocos and so is our driving pace. Speed limits max at 50kms on West Island, giving kids the freedom to ride bikes and explore freely, a freedom many city kids have never experienced.

There are no snakes, no stingers, no crocodiles and no dangerous spiders, making Cocos a stress-free environment for outdoor play and exploration.

Tips for travelling with kids to the Cocos Islands

Travelling with kids already takes a bit more organising than a child-free holiday. Here are our tips for a stress free holiday with the family.

1. Book ahead

There are several family friendly accommodation options available on the Cocos Islands. They book out quickly over busy periods, so you’ll need to book well in advance (at least 6 months to a year for school holiday periods).

Spots are limited on experiences and car hire too. Start planning your itinerary and book tours at least a few months in advance.

2. Pack essentials

Supplies can be limited on the islands so be sure to pack these family essentials:

  • Floaties

  • Snorkel sets

  • Fishing gear

  • Rashies & reef shoes

  • Sunscreen & mozzie repellent

  • Bandaids and small first aid kit

  • Snacks for hungry little explorers

  • Favourite comfort foods for picky eaters

3. Hire a car for maximum flexibility

With many places of interest located outside the settlement, hiring a car is the best way to explore West Island. Child restraints are available on request, so let your car hire provider know if you’ll need one when you book.

Bikes and e-bikes are also a fun way to explore for families with older kids.

If going with the flow is how you roll, you will love the Cocos Keeling Islands. They have a small – very small – country town vibe. Your activities revolve around the exquisite lagoon whether they be snorkelling, diving, fishing, parasailing, or just relaxing under a coconut palm reading a book while inhaling the frangipani infused air

Scuba diving at Cocos Keeling islands is nothing short of spectacular. Fabulous visibility, pristine coral reefs, abundant marine life and all the trappings of a tropical paradise without the flashy resorts. Yes, it is isolated and it takes some effort to get there, but this is more than offset by the quality of the diving, the friendly locals and the very laid back and relaxing ambience of the entire place. It is quirky, fun and a great place for a holiday. We will return and soon

Don’t miss this place. My wife and I recently spent a fantastic week on Cocos Keeling Islands. We took the opportunity to take the twice weekly ferry service from West Island to Direction Island... we loved it so much we came back for a second time.

Home Island is definitely quieter than West Island with religion a big part of daily life but the locals were so friendly and welcoming. It was so nice to be able to swim straight off the shore in amazing turquoise water while we cooked BBQs at sunset. Highly recommended!
